How often does turbine oil need to be filtered?

Time:2025-07-10 13:57:06  Reading volume:

The frequency of filtration of turbine oil (steam turbine oil) needs to be determined comprehensively based on factors such as oil quality, equipment operating environment, and system cleanliness requirements. It is usually necessary to flexibly adjust it in combination with regular inspections and actual operating conditions. The following are specific suggestions:

Conventional filtration frequency reference

1. During daily operation

- Continuous filtration: For large steam turbine units or key equipment, it is recommended to equip online oil filtering devices to maintain 24-hour uninterrupted circulation filtration to ensure oil cleanliness (such as NAS level 6-8 or ISO 4406 14/12-16/14).

- Intermittent filtration: If there is no online system, offline filtration can be performed every 1 to 3 months (adjusted according to the oil quality test results).

2. After new oil or oil replenishment

- New oil or replenished oil may contain impurities introduced during transportation/storage. It needs to be filtered for 4 to 8 hours immediately after injection into the system to ensure that the cleanliness meets the standard.

3. Before an overhaul or an oil change

- When the equipment is shut down for overhaul, it is recommended to filter and purify the turbine oil (including dehydration and impurity removal) to extend the life of the oil.

Key influencing factors and adjustment principles

1. Oil quality test indicators (core basis)

- Particle contamination: NAS grade or ISO code must be filtered immediately when it exceeds the standard.

- Moisture content: Dehydration and filtration must be started when it is >500ppm (or the manufacturer's specified value).

- Acid value, oxidation degree: If it is close to the limit (such as acid value >0.2mg KOH/g), it is necessary to combine filtration or oil change.

2. Equipment operating environment

- Harsh environment (high humidity, dusty): shorten the filtration cycle (such as once a month).

- Closed, clean environment: can be extended to 3~6 months.

3. Oil system characteristics

- Large oil tank volume: good impurity sedimentation effect, can appropriately reduce the frequency.

- Old system (poor sealing): need to increase the filtering frequency to prevent the intrusion of pollutants.

Filtering method selection

|            Filtering requirements              |                           Recommended method                               |                         Frequency recommendation                           |

|------------------------------------------|------------------------------------------------------------------|-----------------------------------------------------------------|

| Particle removal                                   | Precision oil filter (1~5μm filter element)                              | Real-time adjustment according to pollution degree            |

| Water removal                                     | Vacuum oil filter or coalescing dehydration device  | Continuous operation until the water content exceeds the standard |

| Oxidation product/colloid treatment  | Adsorption oil filter (such as diatomaceous earth filtration) | Activate 1~2 times a year or when the acid value increases  |

Maintenance recommendations

1. Regular inspection: Detect key indicators such as particle size, water content, acid value, etc. of the oil at least once every 3 months.

2. Record analysis: Establish an oil status trend chart to predict the filtration cycle.

3. Filter element management: The filter element of the online filter needs to be replaced when the pressure difference is greater than 0.3MPa, and the filter element needs to be replaced for each batch of offline filtration.

Precautions

- Avoid excessive filtration: Frequent filtration may accelerate the loss of oil additives (such as antioxidants), and it is necessary to balance cleanliness and oil performance.

- Sudden pollution treatment: If the system enters water or metal wear particles increase suddenly, emergency filtration must be started immediately and the pollution source must be checked.

Example working conditions:

- Gas turbine (high temperature and high pressure): monthly online filtration + quarterly offline precision filtration.

- Hydropower station turbine unit (high humidity): dehydration filtration every 2 months + comprehensive purification every half year.

The final frequency should be based on the requirements of the equipment manufacturer and the oil inspection data, and dynamically adjusted and optimized.
