How to Choose the Right Filtration Accuracy for a Vacuum Oil Purifier?

Selecting the right filtration accuracy (sometimes called filter fineness) for a vacuum oil purifier depends on three key factors: the type of oil, the equipment requirements, and the level of contamination. The goal is to maintain the required oil cleanliness for safe, efficient, and reliable operation.

Step 1: Identify What Needs to Be Filtered

Moisture → Removed mainly by the vacuum dehydration system, not by the filter element.

Solid particles → Metal shavings, dust, fibers, and seal debris. These contaminants are controlled by the filter’s micron rating.

Step 2: Match Filtration Accuracy to the Equipment

Different applications demand different levels of oil cleanliness:

Hydraulic systems → 1–10 μm (very strict, protects servo and proportional valves).

Turbine oil → 3–10 μm (stabilizes bearings and control systems).

Transformer oil / insulating oil → 1–5 μm (removes fine particles to improve breakdown voltage and insulation).

Gear oil and lubricating oil → 5–25 μm (suitable for larger component clearances).

Flushing or new oil refilling → 10–40 μm (efficiently removes coarse particles during cleaning).

Tip: Always check your equipment manual for the required oil cleanliness (ISO 4406 or NAS standards).

Step 3: Practical Tips for Filtration Accuracy

Use multi-stage filtration → Start with coarse filters, then fine filters if the oil is heavily contaminated.

Handle thick oils carefully → Gear oils may require heating before fine filtration.

Balance cost and performance → Finer filters deliver cleaner oil but clog faster and cost more.

Look beyond the filter → Vacuum dehydration, degassing capacity, and flow rate are equally important for overall performance.

 Quick Checklist

1. Identify your oil type.

2. Check the required cleanliness standard (ISO/NAS).

3. Choose the filter micron rating (1–25 μm depending on application).

4. For dirty oil, use multi-stage filtration.

5. Confirm specifications with the manufacturer before purchasing.

Rule of thumb: If unsure, choose finer filtration. Most vacuum oil purifiers are equipped with a pre-filter, which protects the fine filter and allows flexibility in filtration accuracy.
