There is no single “best” mesh size — it depends on the type of oil, the impurities, and the filtration goal.
Mesh size indicates the number of pores per inch of filter cloth.
Higher mesh → smaller pores, higher filtration accuracy, slower flow.
Lower mesh → larger pores, faster filtration, lower precision.
| Type of Oil | Main Contaminants | Recommended Mesh Size | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hydraulic & Lubricating Oil | Metal debris, dust, gum | 100–400 mesh | 100–200 mesh for pre-filtration; 300–400 mesh for precision systems. |
| Quenching & Rolling Oil | Metal oxides, carbon, particles | 200–600 mesh | Start around 200 mesh, then increase based on process needs. |
| Edible & Crude Oil | Fibers, phospholipids, residue | 300–800+ mesh | 300 mesh for rough; 600–800+ mesh for clear oil. |
| Waste Engine Oil | Carbon, sludge, shavings | 100–300 mesh | Start with 80–100 mesh, then refine with 200–300 mesh. |
| Transformer & Turbine Oil | Moisture, fine particles | 500–1000+ mesh | Requires ultra-fine filtration or vacuum/centrifugal systems. |
Test Before Batch Use: Try multiple mesh sizes to observe filtration clarity and efficiency.
Use Staged Filtration: Start with coarse mesh (e.g., 100 mesh) for pre-filtration, then switch to finer mesh (e.g., 400 mesh). This protects pumps and extends filter life.
Mesh count is important, but six additional factors determine performance:
Choose materials with oil and heat resistance.
PP (Polypropylene): Most common; oil- and acid-resistant; up to 90 °C.
PET (Polyester): High strength, 150 °C resistance.
Nylon (PA): Durable, 180 °C resistance; avoid strong acids.
Glass Fiber: 280 °C+, good for high-temp oils; brittle.
PTFE (Teflon): Excellent for chemicals, 260 °C, non-stick; costly.
Recommendation: Use PP for most industrial, hydraulic, and edible oils.
A more scientific measure than mesh count.
High air permeability: Faster filtration, lower precision.
Low air permeability: Slower filtration, higher accuracy.
Request L/m²/s air permeability data from your supplier for precision comparison.
Affects impurity holding and cleaning performance.
Satin weave: Smooth surface, clog-resistant, ideal for oil filtration.
Plain weave: Simple and economical for rough filtration.
Twill weave: Stronger, higher dirt-holding capacity for viscous oils.
